15 teams headed out on the Grand Union canal at Knowle for the final showdown in this year’s Lure Anglers Canal Club pairs league. At least three teams were in with a shout of winning the league. Winning the match looked like being key to this year’s final placings.
Wasping gear was out in force at what has traditionally been a small perch venue. The perch were there as usual . . . . but not necessarily in the usual places.
In the end, No Wasps Here of Steve Wilson and Derek Holmes took advantage of finding a couple of large shoals in two different places to run out winners with 1004cm. And to show that wasping isn’t just about the small perch, Steve also grabbed the team a bonus five points by netting the day’s biggest perch at 37cm. The win also made Steve and Derek this year’s pairs league champions.
John Cheyne and Adam Kirby came second with 625cm after finding a big shoal of perch around a boat, and Weapons of Match Destruction of Jamie Potts and Tom Knight were third with 507cm.
Largest zander of 56cm went to Joanna Davies of PKS.
The first match in the new season’s pairs league will be at Hatton on Saturday, March 16.
